Fall Out Boy Book Tag

Music and literature are my two great loves. As such, I love tags that combine the two. This tag takes Fall Out Boy songs and forms questions out of them. My emo heart loves Fall Out Boy, so I’ve been excited to do this tag since I found it. And today is the day I finally give it a shot.

1. Take This to Your Grave: A book that’s a little rough around the edges but you love anyway

The Host by Stephenie Meyer

Granted, I haven’t read this book since high school, but I thoroughly enjoyed it. In fact, I was pleasantly surprised by it. Looking back, it’s got its problems. But I still have a fondness for it. Perhaps that would change if I ever reread it, but for now I consider it a book a part of me still loves.

2. Sugar, We’re Goin’ Down: A book that lives up to the hype

Nevernight by Jay Kristoff

I refused to read this for a while because I hate Kristoff’s other series The Illuminae Files. But people kept hyping it up and it sounded right up my alley, so I gave it a chance. I’m so glad I did because it really does live up to the hype. I’m sure this series is going to be a new favorite.

3. A Little Less Sixteen Candles, A Little More “Touch Me”: A book with pop culture references

Simon vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda by Becky Albertalli

Technically, any Albertalli book fits this question but I picked this one arbitrarily. Usually I don’t like when books have pop culture references, but it’s part of the charm and realism of these books.

4. Thnks fr th Mmrs: A book that you changed your opinion about

Shatter Me by Tahareh Mafi

I used to love this series, but Restore Me ruined that for me. It alters the canon too much and adds world-building way too late. It just makes all the issues in the original series more glaring. I’m leaving Shatter Me in my past where it belongs.

5. What A Catch, Donnie: A character that you want to take care of

Kell Maresh

Out of all the Shades of Magic characters, Kell has it the worst. He suffers the most and is constantly underappreciated by the other characters and the readers. He needs to know he is loved and appreciated. V.E. Schwab put him through too much for the fandom to not give him his due. My son deserves better and I will give it to him.

6. Just One Yesterday: A book you wish you could read for the first time again

Six of Crows & Crooked Kingdom by Leigh Bardugo

The first time I read this series, I was so invested. I miss being that invested and being shocked by the twists. I love watching people fall in love with this duology and miss that feeling.

7. Hot To The Touch, Cold On The Inside: A book that you were excited to read but ended up being a disappointment

Daisy Jones & The Six by Taylor Jenkins Reid

After the masterpiece that was The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo, this book was a huge letdown. The characters are either deeply unlikable (and not in a fun way) or two-dimensional. I didn’t feel connected to anyone and didn’t like the narrative twist toward the end. What should’ve been a phenomenal read is instead aggressively middling.

8. Centuries: A book you see everywhere but are afraid to read

The Name of the Wind by Patrick Rothfuss

Epic high fantasy tomes always intimidate me, despite being my bread and butter. I’m also concerned I wouldn’t like it because the protagonist is a Mary Sue (or Marty Stu, I guess). I’m not into characters who are good at everything and never suffer any consequences. I don’t want to be ousted by the fantasy community, but I’m too scared to read this.

9. Ghostbusters (I’m Not Afraid): A new take on a classic story

Sherwood by Meagan Spooner

I actually haven’t read this one yet, but I loved Hunted when I read it in 2017. Sherwood is a Robin Hood retelling that follows Maid Marian taking up the Robin Hood mantle. It sounds interesting and I have faith in Spooner. After all, she wrote my favorite Beauty & the Beast retelling.

10. Young and Menace: A controversial book

The Golden Compass by Philip Pullman

For this question, I looked up some controversial books. I wanted to pick one that’s actually controversial and not just a book people either love or hate. I saw this one on the list and was surprised. I imagine the controversy surrounds the daemons and the portrayal of Romani people. But that’s just an educated guess.
