Top 5 Wednesday: Books and Series Best to Go into Blind

Hello, fellow fans of things! Sorry I haven’t been posting as much lately. I’ve been scrambling for ideas, feeling like I always talk about the same things over and over. Plus, I’ve been binging It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia. Twice (I’m already on season eight again after watching the show twice in under a month.). And I spent the past couple of days stuck on a jury (nothing too exciting, though it was a murder trial). And yet, here we are— at Wednesday once again. And it’s finally a Top 5 Wednesday topic I’m into. This week’s topic is the top five books or series you think are best to go into blind. There are many reasons why this could be, including it being hard to describe or the summary actually being a hindrance. But enough preamble, let’s get on with my choices!
1. The Daughter of Smoke and Bone trilogy and Strange the Dreamer both by Laini Taylor: Laini Taylor’s worlds are often built on twists and things you don’t expect, especially in regards to the creatures and character identities. In trying to explain her books, you either give away too much or undersell them. Just trust me when I say they’re excellent.
2. The Raven Cycle by Maggie Stiefvater: The summary for this series makes it sound so basic and tropey. Well, at the least the summary for The Raven Boys does. The only way you can ever adequately explain this series is with random words associated with it, but that doesn’t tell anyone anything. But again, it’s a really good series.
3. The Female of the Species by Mindy McGinnis: Despite being a contemporary, this story is still overall hard to explain. But I will says it’s super feminist and was one of my top books of 2016. And you should really read it. (Do look for trigger warnings though.)
4. Monstress by Marjorie Liu: This graphic novel series, while gorgeously illustrated, is also incredibly hard to explain. It’s also a little difficult to understand at first, but once it starts making sense it gets so good. I can’t wait to read the next volume.
5. The Bone Witch by Rin Chupeco: This is one that people who don’t go into it blind find they are disappointed by. I went in pretty blind and I loved it. It’s a life story and I’m super excited to continue.
