Hello, everyone! Sorry I’ve been AWOL. To be perfectly honest, I haven’t felt like writing anything. But today I do, so I’ve decided to do a book tag. This one takes popular ‘90s films and makes questions out of them. I’ve tried to give answers I haven’t used ad nauseum, so let’s see how I do:
- She’s All That: A book couple that is an odd pairing but still fit perfectly together
Simon Lewis and Isabelle Lightwood from The Mortal Instruments by Cassandra Clare. It’s not just that he’s a Total Nerd and she’s a Hot Chick. It’s that he’s goofy and owns it and she’s more of a kickass heartbreaker. And yet, they bring out the best in each other. He brings out her inner nerd and she brings out his inner stud. You wouldn’t think these two would even walk in the same circles, let alone fall for each other. I love them so much and honestly would read spin-off stories about them hunting demons and just being together.
- 10 Things I Hate About You: A book or series you have a love/hate relationship with
The Grisha Trilogy by Leigh Bardugo. Overall, I love this series. But I really don’t like the ending. I don’t like what becomes of Alina and I don’t like who she ends up with. I also don’t like the implications of both things in conjunction with each other. Not a good look, in my opinion.
- Clueless: A character that is totally clueless but you love them anyway
Harry Potter from— what else— Harry Potter by JK Rowling. I mean, he doesn’t realize his best friend is time-traveling. He doesn’t even question it when he gets a mysterious broom while an escaped convict is attempting to hunt him down. Homeboy is not very observant. He’s wonderful and I love him to bits (and yes, he is the best character in Harry Potter), but sometimes he’s not very… aware.
- Titanic: A book that made you cry
The Tiger’s Daughter by K. Arsenault Rivera. But they were happy tears. That ending was… everything to me. I don’t want to spoil anything so I’ll leave it at that, but please read this book. That ending will surely make you cry too.
- American Pie: A book that made you laugh
A Destiny of Dragons by TJ Klune. Technically I haven’t finished this yet, but the few chapters I did read had me rolling. It’s the second book in the Tales from Verania series and I’m so excited to get back to it. It’s. Hysterical.
- Can’t Hardly Wait: A book with a crazy party
Before I Fall by Lauren Oliver. In fact, the party was a big plot point. It’s where everything goes to shit on the day Sam lives over and over again. This party involves drinking, humiliation, and death. Yes, death. It’s a wild ass party.
- Cruel Intentions: A character you can never fully trust
Hideo Tanaka from Warcross by Marie Lu. Don’t get me wrong— I love him. But I knew something was up the second he hired a rogue hacker to hunt someone down in his game. Granted, most of that is because I’ve read so many books and gotten blindsided that I don’t trust anyone anymore. I didn’t foresee what eventually came to pass, but still. And, while I see where he’s coming from, I don’t know that I can trust him with his decision. He represents a complex issue, one I’m so excited to get more into in the sequel.
- Drive Me Crazy: Favorite “boy-next-door” or “girl-next-door” character
Simon Spier from Simon vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda by Becky Albertalli. He’s your average gay-next-door. His struggles are relatable, especially once he comes out (at least for me, an out lesbian). And I just… really like him. He’s a cute kid.
- Scream: A book with a memorable villain
The Queen of the Tearling by Erika Johansen. And I’m including both the Red Queen and Row Finn, both of whom are major antagonists. They both serve different purposes as well. The Red Queen is interesting because she’s very human and flawed. Row Finn seems impossible to beat and he’s got the disturbing charm of a cult leader. Both represent different but equally as daunting challenges for Kelsea and neither will be leaving my mind any time soon.
- The Craft: A book with witches
The Bone Witch by Rin Chupeco. These witches are called ashas and they each specialize in one kind of magic. Tea, the protagonist, specializes in death magic. It’s such a good book and I can’t wait for the sequel!
