It’s been a while since I’ve done a book tag, so I thought I’d bang one out today. This tag is all about books that are out of your comfort zone. To absolutely no one’s surprise, I’m a huge fantasy lover. The higher the fantasy, the better. But that doesn’t mean I don’t like to branch out from time to time. Now let’s talk about the books that got me a little out of my depth, so to speak.
A book that is an exception when it comes to genres or elements in books that you typically don’t like
I’m not a fan of contemporary books. They just don’t appeal to me. But I really enjoy Albertalli’s writing style and her characters.
A book you enjoyed from a genre you previously had some stigma about:
The only genre I really have any stigma about is romance. This doesn’t quite fit that genre, but it is a new adult series with a lot of focus on romance. It’s a long series, but well worth the read. I grew to care about the characters and their relationships deeply. Not all new adult romances are bad.
A book you didn’t know was actually out of your comfort zone until you started reading it
I really thought it was going to be a gay space adventure. It’s really just your standard contemporary novel. I was severely let down.
Pick a friend or BookTuber that motivates you to pick up books you might not normally be interested in. What is one book out of your norm that they convinced you to give a try?
I usually take recommendations from people who have the same taste as me, so it’s rare that I’m convinced to try something truly different. But my friend Twinkle recommended this book to me because she was sure I’d like it. I don’t normally read historical fiction, so I was wary. But I trust her judgment. It wound up being one of my favorite books I read in 2018.
A book that is out of your comfort zone that you would like to read
I’m not a big thriller fan, but my mom is. I heard this book was really good, so I got it for her for Christmas. She loved it, so now it’s officially on my TBR.
A book or genre so out of what you normally read that you’ll probably give it a(nother) try
I’ve heard that this book is just a bizarre read— but in a good way. Everyone says it’s best to go into blind. It’s literary fiction, so it’s more challenging than other genres. Plus, V.E. Schwab says it’s really good. I definitely hope to get to this one this year.
