Happy Valentine’s Day! I don’t have a Valentine, but at least I’m gay. Speaking of being gay, this week’s Top 5 Wednesday is my time to shine. This week’s topic is your top five F/F romances. This, of course, includes lesbians, bi women, pan women, trans women, ace women, and more. As the resident lesbian on this blog (and the only person on this blog, period), I know a thing or two about having my heartstrings tugged by girls in love. My picks are from all variety of media, so let’s get started:
- Yorkie and Kelly from the Black Mirror episode “San Junipero”: I mean, these two gave me so many feelings. I don’t want to give any spoilers because it’s best to just experience it, but watching these two fall in love was beautiful. And that ending? So many tears. Truly, nothing is better than ‘80s girlfriends. These two are indisputable proof that heaven is a place on earth (see what I did there?).
- Barsalayaa Shefali and O-Shizuka from The Tiger’s Daughter by K. Arsenault Rivera: If ever there were soulmates, it’s these two. I mean, their connection is literally written in the stars from birth. It’s so beautiful to see how their relationship grows and changes as they get older. They’re both warriors, and yet they really embody the butch/femme dynamic. The way Shefali talks about Shizuka makes me feel all warm and fuzzy inside. Whenever Shizuka calls Shefali “my love,” my heart melts. I’m only halfway into the book, but I already love these two so much.
- Dennaleia and Amaranthine from Of Fire and Stars by Audrey Coulthurst: While this book is mediocre as a fantasy novel, it’s fantastic as a lesbian love story. Denna and Mare have such a slow burn relationship, once again embodying the classic butch/femme dynamic. Though at first they don’t like each other, they slowly become reluctant allies and then friends. From there, they become the softest girlfriends of ever. I can’t wait to see what their relationship has in store in the sequel.
- Elena Alvarez and Syd from One Day at a Time: If you haven’t watched this Netflix original, you absolutely should. It’s amazing. What’s great about this relationship is how pure and innocent it is. Elena only recently came out as a lesbian, so Syd is her first significant other. I use that gender neutral term because Syd is gender non-binary and uses they/them pronouns. But really, they’re just so precious. They’re both little geeky nerds who are awkward but well-intentioned. They also both rock pant suits. They’re so cute and soft, I really hope they’re still together in season three (which will only happen if you watch the show!).
- Elphaba Thropp and Glinda Arduenna Upland from Wicked (both the Broadway musical and the book by Gregory Maguire): Whatever way you slice it, these two are totally in love. It’s a bit more palpable in the musical (I mean, I think we can all agree that “For Good” is a love duet), but their love is present in the books as well (Glinda really uses her dying breath to flirt with Elphaba’s spirit like she’s her wife). These two deserved a happy ending.
