Hello, hello, hello. It’s Top 5 Wednesday again. In keeping with May’s topic-less topics, this week I’ve chosen a fun one. Today I’m going to talk about my top five favorite character names. To me, character names are as important as character traits. Of course, sometimes a name is just cool. Either way, I deeply value character names. So now, in no particular order, here are five character names that really tickle my fancy:
- Bayou from The Refrigerator Monologues by Catherynne M. Valente:
I don’t know why, but I am obsessed with this name. Bayou is a citizen of Atlantis, but don’t mistake her for a mermaid. She’s closer to an alligator person than anything. But I just love how well this name works for her. It’s so cool.
- Vasilisa “Lissa” Dragomir from Vampire Academy by Richelle Mead:
Talk about a fancy, kingly-sounding name! Honestly, it’s the ‘Dragomir’ part I love most. What a fantastic last name! I just… I really dig it.
- Han Solo from Star Wars:
Here we’ve got a simple yet iconic name. And it works so well for him. He works solo— well, with the exception of Chewie. It isn’t until he meets Han and Leia that his name starts to become ironic. Either way, what an awesome name.
- Kestrel from The Winner’s Trilogy by Marie Rutkoski:
This is a case of a name being unique and fitting the character. A kestrel is a type of hawk and Kestrel is hawkishly clever. Oddly enough, I was once really inspired by this name. It’s really great.
- Lazlo Strange from Strange the Dreamer by Laini Taylor:
I love this name for several reasons. First, it’s so unique. Second, it fits the character really well. And third, it’s the inspiration for my penname. Or, I guess my pen surname. 10/10 would use this name again.
What are some of you favorite character names? Let me know in the comments!
Dragomir is such a cool last name, but I also love the name Vasilisa! 😀
