The Most Underrated is a meme in which I discuss the most underrated songs by an artist or band. Occasionally I may branch out, but this is the main theme. Today’s artist spotlight is on Miley Cyrus!
We all grew up on Miley Cyrus. Okay, so technically I was a teenager during her Disney Channel reign, but I was still a big fan. From Hannah Montana to that infamous VMAs performance, Cyrus has cemented herself as a household name.
And yet, she still has songs that are underrated— album tracks that never got their due. Half of these songs Cyrus hasn’t even performed live (one only once on an Instagram livestream). Not only are these songs underrated, but I think they’re some of Cyrus’ best. From Breakout to SHE IS COMING, these are the songs that I think deserve more appreciation.
While I liked this Breakout song as a teen, I appreciate it so much more as an adult. It feels like an anxiety attack and also like calming yourself from said anxiety attack. It also somehow hits on the unbearable monotony of adult life and how that wears on a person. It’s a pop/rock anthem that could’ve come from the ‘70s. This is simple an incredible song.
This The Time of Our Lives track has always felt like a quintessential Miley song to me, despite being one of her least popular. It’s bitter and honest, while also being quirky and filled with personality. It’s proof that Cyrus would make great rock music if she chose. Trust me that my praising of this song isn’t just talk.
It’s a shame Cyrus isn’t really known for her ballads because she has some great ones. Case in point: this track from Can’t Be Tamed. It’s always been one of my favorites from that album. It’s one of her most honest and heartbreaking breakup songs. Her pain is so palpable. Despite the lyrics sounding petty and bitter, her tone betrays that she’s actually hurting deeply. I’d take this song over most popular breakup ballads.
Bangerz is filled with songs about Cyrus’ first breakup with Liam Hemsworth, but this one is the most mature and self-aware. It’s this power ballad, Cyrus reflects on what wasn’t working about their relationship and how she’s still not sure she’s doing the right thing in leaving him. And yet, it’s still something she needs to do for her own personal growth. It’s one of Cyrus’ most beautiful and heart-wrenching songs, and I’m right about that.
Miley Cyrus & Her Dead Petz is Cyrus’ most questionable record, but even it is not without its gems. This song is so dark and ominous, an exploration of Cyrus’ faults and flaws. It’s a slow and creeping drawl with a drop that refuses to, well, drop. It’s so unsatisfying, but that’s because Cyrus’ self-exploration is as well. She doesn’t resolve anything. This is Cyrus as she should be.
This SHE IS COMING track is exactly what Younger Now should’ve been. It manages to combine country and pop in a way that feels authentically Miley. It’s a power ballad in which Cyrus reflects on what a difficult partner she is and her fear of truly giving in. She sounds agonized in a way where she still places the blame on herself. The fact that this song isn’t making Cyrus’ next album but “Cattitude” is is a crime most evil.
Do you agree with my choices? What Miley Cyrus songs do you think are underrated? Let me know in the comments!
I still love “Simple Song” and “Take Me Along” to this day, Breakout and Can’t Be Tamed have so many great songs on them that I feel like a lot of people forget about

Definitely. I had three songs from Can’t Be Tamed I considered for this post.
