Most Anticipated Books: June 2020

Book tag_

Most Anticipated Books is a monthly series in which I discuss the releases I’m most excited for in the coming month. In June, there are four books coming out that I’m excited to read.

My Calamity Jane by Cynthia Hand, Brodi Ashton, and Jodi Meadows

81naaAH1DEL

Summary: Welcome to 1876 and a rootin’-tootin’ America bursting with gunslingers, outlaws, and garou.

JANE (a genuine hero-eene)

Calamity’s her name, and garou hunting’s her game— when she’s not starring in Wild Bill’s Traveling Show, that is. She reckons that if a girl wants to be a legend, she should just go ahead and be one.

FRANK (*wolf whistle*)

Frank “the Pistol Prince” Butler is the Wild West’s #1 bachelor. He’s also the best sharpshooter on both sides of the Mississippi, but he’s about to meet his match…

ANNIE (get your gun!)

Annie Oakley (yep, that Annie) is lookin’ for a job, not a romance, but she can’t deny there’s something about Frank she likes. Really likes. Still, she’s pretty sure that anything he can do, she can do better.

A HAIRY SITUATION

After a garou hunt goes south and Jane finds a suspicious-like bite on her arm, she turns tail for Deadwood, where there’s been talk of a garou cure. But things ain’t always what they seem—meaning the gang better hightail it after her before they’re a day late and a Jane short.

Release Date: June 2

My Impression: I’ve read the other two books in the Lady Janies series and thought they were a whole lot of fun. I’ve been especially excited for this one, despite not being a big fan of Westerns.

The Empire of Gold by S.A. Chakraborty

91j+GxLJQ2L

Summary: Daevabad has fallen.

After a brutal conquest stripped the city of its magic, Nahid leader Banu Manizheh and her resurrected commander, Dara, must try to repair their fraying alliance and stabilize a fractious, warring people.

But the bloodletting and loss of his beloved Nahri have unleashed the worst demons of Dara’s dark past. To vanquish them, he must face some ugly truths about his history and put himself at the mercy of those he once considered enemies.

Having narrowly escaped their murderous families and Daevabad’s deadly politics, Nahri and Ali, now safe in Cairo, face difficult choices of their own. While Nahri finds peace in the old rhythms and familiar comforts of her human home, she is haunted by the knowledge that the loved ones she left behind and the people who considered her a savior are at the mercy of a new tyrant. Ali, too, cannot help but look back, and is determined to return to rescue his city and the family that remains. Seeking support in his mother’s homeland, he discovers that his connection to the marid goes far deeper than expected and threatens not only his relationship with Nahri, but his very faith.

As peace grows more elusive and old players return, Nahri, Ali, and Dara come to understand that in order to remake the world, they may need to fight those they once loved… and take a stand for those they once hurt.

Release Date: June 11

My Impression: You guys know I’ve loved this series since 2018. I’ve given both books so far 5 stars. I absolutely cannot wait for this conclusion.

The Order of the Pure Moon Reflected in Water by Zen Cho

91194SgmuiL

Summary: Zen Cho returns with a found family wuxia fantasy that combines the vibrancy of old school martial arts movies with characters drawn from the margins of history.

A bandit walks into a coffeehouse, and it all goes downhill from there. Guet Imm, a young votary of the Order of the Pure Moon, joins up with an eclectic group of thieves (whether they like it or not) in order to protect a sacred object, and finds herself in a far more complicated situation than she could have ever imagined.

Release Date: June 23

My Impression: I actually found this book when looking over upcoming releases on Tor Publishing’s website. They’ve releases a lot of favorites and this one sounds like it could become another. I feel like I read somewhere this book has a F/F romance as well, but I could be thinking of another book so don’t quote me on that.

Mexican Gothic by Silvia Moreno-Garcia

53152636._SX0_SY0_

Summary: After receiving a frantic letter from her newly-wed cousin begging for someone to save her from a mysterious doom, Noemí Taboada heads to High Place, a distant house in the Mexican countryside. She’s not sure what she will find— her cousin’s husband, a handsome Englishman, is a stranger, and Noemí knows little about the region.

Noemí is also an unlikely rescuer: She’s a glamorous debutante, and her chic gowns and perfect red lipstick are more suited for cocktail parties than amateur sleuthing. But she’s also tough and smart, with an indomitable will, and she is not afraid: Not of her cousin’s new husband, who is both menacing and alluring; not of his father, the ancient patriarch who seems to be fascinated by Noemí; and not even of the house itself, which begins to invade Noemi’s dreams with visions of blood and doom.

Her only ally in this inhospitable abode is the family’s youngest son. Shy and gentle, he seems to want to help Noemí, but might also be hiding dark knowledge of his family’s past. For there are many secrets behind the walls of High Place. The family’s once colossal wealth and faded mining empire kept them from prying eyes, but as Noemí digs deeper she unearths stories of violence and madness.

And Noemí, mesmerized by the terrifying yet seductive world of High Place, may soon find it impossible to ever leave this enigmatic house behind.

Release Date: June 30

My Impression: I’ve been meaning to get into Moreno-Garcia’s work for a while now. Thouhg I’m not usually a fan of mystery/thrillers, I’ve heard too many good things about Moreno-Garcia’s writing to not be excited for this one.

Before you go, I implore you to continue supporting the Black Lives Matter movement. This Carrd is regularly updated with petitions, donation links, and more. We’ve already made some great strides, but the fight isn’t over yet. The protests are working, but the fight isn’t over yet.

There are many Black people we still need to seek justice for. People like Sandra Bland, Breonna Taylor, and Tony McDade. We need to keep fighting for a world where Black lives are given the same dignity and importance as white lives. Please continue supporting the movement even after it stops being a trending topic.

I have a Donations page on my blog, where I will be permanently linking the BLM Carrd. You can use this Carrd to find places to continually donate, sign petitions, and more. I will do my part by continuing to donate, sign petitions, spread awareness, and call out racism when I see or hear it. Please continue to do your part.
