Top 5 Tuesday: Books I Want for Christmas

Top 5 Tuesday is a weekly book discussion with a new topic every Tuesday hosted by Meeghan of Meeghan Reads. It’s each blogger’s job to pick five book-related things (though you’re welcome to pick things from other media, if necessary) that fit the topic.

Today’s topic is books we’d like to receive as gifts this holiday season. My family celebrates Christmas and my birthday is six days later, so this has traditionally been a very gift-heavy season for me. The books I’m putting on my list today I’ve either specifically requested or have mentioned being interested in reading. So, relatives, if you’re wondering what to get me for Christmas, hint, hint, wink, wink!

The Dreamblood by N.K. Jemisin

What??? There are N.K. Jemisin books on my list????? Who would’ve thought?!?!??!?! Well, buckle up, because there’s more. This series seems to be Jemisin’s most divisive, but I’m sure I’ll enjoy it because, hello, it’s written by N.K. Jemisin! I don’t even know what it’s about. I just know I need to read it and hope to find it under the Christmas tree on Christmas morning.

How Long ‘Til Black Future Month? by N.K. Jemisin

Okay, let’s just knock the other Jemisin entry out now. This is a short story collection that, I believe, examines issues Black people face but through an SFF lens. That sounds cool to me! I haven’t read any of Jemisin’s short story work yet (unless you count the prequel to The City We Became, which was originally published as a short story), but it’s bound to be as good as her novels.

A Sky Beyond the Storm by Sabaa Tahir

I’m super excited to read this series finale, but it needs to be this cover. It’s the UK cover and the UK covers are by far the best covers this series has had. Plus, then it’ll match the rest of the books in my collection (I own each installment in the UK editions). I don’t know how international shipping is being affected by the pandemic, but I still refuse to get any edition of this book besides this one. If it’s delayed, that just gives me more time to reread the first three books!

One Life by Megan Rapinoe

I really want to read this book, not because I care about soccer, but because Rapinoe is a successful lesbian. That said, because I probably won’t get to it for a while, I’ve elected to wait for it to come out in paperback. Unless someone were to get it for me for Christmas. *Sides eyes my family*

Daughter of Smoke and Bone by Laini Taylor

Do I already have multiple editions of this series? Yes. Did I specially search for and buy the older UK covers because I like them better than the original US covers? Also yes. But these editions (also UK, I believe) are just so pretty! If I had these, I would stop buying new editions of Laini Taylor books! I promise (but my fingers are crossed)!

What books are you hoping to get this holiday season? Tell me in the comments!
